Energy Freedom: 55 days to go

Human Events / IER’s Dan Kish - Washington’s Best-Kept Secret, More U.S. Energy Becomes Accessible October 1 If Congress Doesn’t Act: “No oil has ever been found by people in Washington saying it can’t be done. So don’t trust the government’s numbers about how much oil remains offshore-they don’t know, and they haven’t let others find out… The good news about these riders is that since they have to be renewed between now and October 1, the heightened awareness of Americans about our energy situation may mean that the nation will benefit, because, as everyone knows, if Congress is good at one thing, it’s doing nothing, and if they do nothing about these riders, America will be on the road to finally doing something about producing more energy at home.

CongressDaily - Democrat Says Reid Should Stop Playing Blame Game: “People are tired of sending wealth out of the country. It’s criminal the way the politics have been operating.” The issue of energy independence, he said, is “equal to the Cold War. If we don’t get our hands around the energy cost, we’re finished.” Abercrombie took special aim at Senate Majority Leader Reid, saying he was sick of the Senate’s top Democrat pointing fingers at Minority Leader McConnell. Instead of charging that Republicans are denying him the 60 votes to get a bill through, Reid should fix the problem at the leadership level, Abercrombie said.

New York Times - Home Energy Prices Expected to Soar: Along with the trillions of barrels of oil estimated offshore and in oil shale, offshore drilling is estimated to hold 55 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Heritage Foundation - Supply Matters: The latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) numbers show the U.S. currently has 986,000 megawatts of capacity to supply the nation’s demand for electricity. EIA predicts that over the next 20 years, the U.S. will need another 292,000 megawatts to keep the economy running. To meet that demand, EIA sees 54% and 36% of that new capacity coming from coal and natural gas power plants. Currently, solar, wind and geothermal power contribute only 1% of our nation’s energy. There is simply no way these sources can produce enough electricity to meet the energy needs of a growing U.S. economy.
