2010 Race Spotlight: TEXAS

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) is running for Governor and will resign her Senate seat sometime after the GOP primary on March 2, 2010.

When Senator Hutchison announced her plans to resign, she was emphatic that it would happen and encouraged Republicans running for her seat. “I will be resigning this Senate seat," Hutchison said. "For all of the good Republicans out there who plan on running for my Senate seat next year, make no mistake, this is going to happen.”

After Senator Hutchison resigns — probably sometime in April — Governor Rick Perry (R) will appoint someone to serve until a special election can be held on November 2, 2010.

Democrats would like nothing more than to flip this seat to their side and begin to “turn Texas blue.” President Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe, recently said that he sees Texas as an opportunity for Democrats to win, which would drastically alter the landscape of the state and national politics. It is critical that conservatives begin building support for a strong candidate so they are in a good position to win the seat next November.

There are a few Republican candidates running for the seat but Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams (R) stands apart. He's an outstanding, uncompromising conservative. Besides being pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, and pro-traditional marriage, Williams strongly supports efforts to:

  • Strengthen national security and oppose appeasement

  • Eliminate wasteful spending and keep taxes low

  • Support free markets and oppose government bailouts

  • Promote energy security

  • Secure our borders and oppose amnesty

  • Expand private health insurance

  • Give parents more private school choices

  • Reform Social Security and Medicare

  • Confirm judges who won't legislate from the bench

  • Promote the American Dream by supporting and defending the Constitution

According to RedState.com, Williams "is set apart from the pack by being extraordinarily articulate, unyielding in his conservatism, unfailing in his ability to relate conservative ideals through an inspiring life story, and able to further set himself apart by virtue of being the rarest of political animals — an electable African American conservative Republican."
