Candidates back DeMint's earmark ban
As U.S. Senator Jim DeMint, chairman of the Senate Conservatives Fund, prepares to force a vote on a one-year earmark moratorium, several Senate candidates around the country have expressed support for amendment.
In Kentucky,
Rand Paul sent an
email to his supporters pledging to stand up to the career politicians in both parties to stop pork-barrel spending.
If the Tea Parties have shown us anything, it's that people are sick and tired of business as usual. They're sick of the mountain of debt. They're sick of their wallets being raided for pet projects and wasteful spending.
That's why I have pledged to join Senator DeMint's fight and help lead the way toward these vital reforms.
In Utah,
Mike Lee posted this note on his
Twitter:
I support @jimdemint 1yr earmark moratorium and would vote in support as the Senator from Utah #utsen #utpol #GOP
In New Hampshire,
Ovide Lamontagne issued a
statement supporting the earmark ban.
Senator DeMint has been a principled and tenacious leader on earmarks from day one in the Senate. He continually sets a strong example for others to follow, even Speaker Pelosi in the House, who today indicated that she too is prepared to support a one?year earmark moratorium. I strongly endorse Senator DeMints efforts and those of other likeminded reformers, and encourage the Senate and House to do the right thing and stop earmarkingright now.
In Indiana,
Marlin Stutzman posted something on his
Twitter backing the earmark ban:
I support @jimdemint 1yr earmark moratorium and would vote in support as the Sen. from Indiana #INsen #rsrh #tcoto
These candidates are showing courage that is badly needed in Washington. Too many Republicans are still unwilling to shut down the favor factory and break their addiction to pork.
Every major, budget-busting spending bill is ultimately passed using earmarks like the "Cornhusker Kickback" and the "Louisiana Purchase" that are included to buy votes for the legislation. That's why a ban on earmarks is the first step towards balancing the budget.
