PA Dems slow to support Specter
POLITICO reports this morning that Sen. Arlen Specter is working the phones to win the support of Democratic Party insiders, but many are withholding their support.
But if Allegheny County is in any way representative of the rest of the state, Specter will have his work cut out persuading rank-and-file Democrats to get behind him.Voters have to get to a comfort level with him as a Democrat that does not exist yet, [Allegheny County Democratic Committee Chairman James] Burn said. If the primary were tomorrow and there were one or two other formidable contenders in the race, I wouldnt say with any certainty that he would win.
Why would Pennsylvania Democrats get behind Specter when they could have
one of their own? Of course there is the endorsement from President Obama, which they suspect was given when strings attached. But they know Specter is going to give them the same fits he's given Republicans for years.
We actually hope they get over their fears an embrace Specter. While polls show him leading Toomey right now, we believe Specter could be the weakest Democratic candidate. His base of support will be thin and unenergetic, and Pennsylvania has a serious case of Specter-fatigue, which will lead many swing voters to give Toomey a chance.
So keep dialing, Senator. We're pulling for you on this one.
