Dodd tries to change the subject
Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Connecticut) is in deep trouble. He took a sweetheart mortgage deal from Countrywide and also slipped a provision into the stimulus bill allowing AIG to use taxpayer bailouts for executive bonuses. He's the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and appears to be trading favors with the industry left and right. All of this has
taken a toll on his popularity back home.
Now he's trying to change the subject. He just
started running a television ad touting his role in passing the recent credit card legislation. (By the way, you know you're in trouble when you start running ads a year and a half before the election.) The interesting thing is that Dodd is so unpopular, the only time he speaks in the ad is when he acknowledges he approved it. The ad actually features — you guessed it — President Obama.
This is probably the best Dodd can do at this point but having other people speak for you has its limitations. Voters want to hear from the candidate himself and
the more he hides behind the president, the more people are going to distrust him.
We also want to point out that the president is going to extraordinary lengths to help Dodd. Why? The Senator is
under an ethics investigation and he's one of the least popular Democrats in the country. Perhaps this is payback for slipping that AIG language into the stimulus bill
for the president and then taking the fall for it. After all, Dodd does seem to know a thing or two about trading favors.
